A heavy heart

My heart has been so heavy today, as I have heard the news of the devastating violence and murders of young children...some my Noah's age...that occured today in a Connecticut elementary school shooting.  I cannot fathom the pain. How my heart aches for the families.  How blessed I feel that my children are safe and snug in their beds...unaware of the violent events of this day.  Bless you, my darlings...and bless the 20 new angels in heaven and the 7 angels that died tryin to protect their students.
What I know from my extensive trauma training is this: CONNECTION matters.  We cannot underestimate the importance of connecting on a REAL, authentic, emotional, and physical level.  When children are not connected, they develop no sense of empathy or remorse.  I will not let this shooter steal my joy. That is the wish of these evil few. Instead, I hug tighter, love bigger, and continue to connect.  I will teach my children to do the same.

"When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, 'Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.' To this day, especially in times of 'disaster,' I remember my mother’s words, and I am always comforted by realizing that there are still so many helpers - so many caring people in this world." -- Mister Rogers
